Program Overview
Introduction to the Master's Program in Digital Humanities
The Master's Program in Digital Humanities at the University of Basel is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the field. The program is delighted to welcome new students and has compiled important information to facilitate a successful start to their studies.
Study Plan and Courses Offered
The study plan for the Master's degree program in Digital Humanities is available, providing an overview of the various modules that can be taken during the degree program and the credit points to be earned for them. The study plan outlines the minimum requirements, and additional courses can broaden and deepen students' knowledge. There is no fixed order in which the courses must or should be taken, unless noted in the courses themselves.
Course Enrolment
Enrolment for courses takes place via the University of Basel's system.
Seminar Paper, Master's Thesis, and Master's Examination
As part of the Master's degree program, students must complete a seminar paper and a Master's examination. If Digital Humanities is chosen as the major, the Master's thesis must also be written in this subject. Further information and guidelines on this work and the examination are available.
Internship
An obligatory part of the Master's program is the internship, which comprises at least 150 working hours. Detailed information on registering for and completing the internship is available. Students must submit the completed internship application form at least four weeks before the start of the internship.
Recognition of Externally Acquired Credit Points
If students would like to transfer credits from outside the university or complete a semester at another university, they can find the process outlined. It is advisable to discuss this with the Digital Humanities academic advisor at an early stage.
Student Involvement
The student association of Digital Humanities offers students the opportunity to play an active role in the life and further development of the degree program. The association promotes the exchange between students, professors, lecturers, and staff of the Digital Humanities Lab and represents students' interests to the lab, the Faculty of Humanities, and the University of Basel.
Consultation Hours and Counselling
If students have questions about study planning, credit transfer, or other concerns, they can book consultation hours or send their questions directly via email.
Digital Humanities Lab and Study Rooms
The Digital Humanities Lab is an interdisciplinary institution of the University of Basel dedicated to the coordination and promotion of research, teaching, and infrastructure in the field of digitalization in the humanities and social sciences. The lab offers both a Master's program and a doctorate in Digital Humanities. Although the lab itself does not provide study rooms, there are numerous well-equipped study rooms available at the University of Basel.
Welcome Event
In the first week of the autumn semester, students are cordially invited to the Welcome(back)@DH event. This event is an excellent opportunity to meet and get to know other students, staff, lecturers, and alumni of Digital Humanities in Basel. It offers students the chance to make valuable contacts, exchange views on current developments in the department, and become part of the growing Digital Humanities community.
