The "Digitally Fit" program is designed to integrate digital literacy development into academic teaching. The program aims to provide teachers with essential information on how and why to integrate digital literacy development into their teaching.
Program Description
Digital fitness, or digital literacy, refers to the capabilities that individuals need to live, learn, and work in increasingly technology-rich environments. The program focuses on the broader capacity to think and act critically in technology-rich environments, going beyond mere technical skills.
Course Format
The course follows a flipped-classroom model, consisting of about 3 hours of asynchronous learning and a 2-hour in-class interactive session with discussion, Q&A, and practical exercises.
Course Requirements
To receive a certificate of attendance, participants must:
- Complete all tasks assigned for the asynchronous learning phase
- Take part in the on-campus synchronous session
- Submit a short course concept that shows either how they have integrated digital literacy development into their teaching in the past or how they could do so in the future

Course Content
The course aims to provide teachers with essential information on how and why to integrate digital literacy development into their teaching. By the end of the course, participants will:
- Know the offerings provided by the University of Basel to support digital literacy development
- Be able to define digital literacy and analyze the expectations and needs of students in this area
- Be able to evaluate the concept of competence-oriented teaching, assess its benefits, and identify potential challenges
- Be able to distinguish between various levels of digital literacy development in university teaching and re-design their courses accordingly
Target Audience
The course is designed for all doctoral candidates and postdocs.
Workload
- 01-07 June 2026: Asynchronous phase (approx. 2 hours)
- 08 June 2026: Classroom session (2 hours)
- 15 June 2026: Submission deadline for a short course concept
- Total workload: approx. 5 hours
Special Features
Once registration is open, applications will be collected for 24 hours, and course places will be allocated by lot. All registrations received after the initial 24-hour period will be put on a waiting list and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
