Course Overview
The Writing Process in Natural Sciences: From Research to Publication is an 8-week online course designed for doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Science. The course aims to convey the know-how of scientific writing and publishing, creating a basis for long-term development of participants' scientific writing skills.
Course Objectives
The main goal of the course is to learn to effectively communicate research findings and publish successful research articles.
Course Content
The course covers the following topics:
- General principles of (scientific) writing and the writing process
- Macrostructure of research articles
- Paragraph and sentence structure, scientific language, and style
- Revisions and peer feedback, publication processes
Course Format
The course employs interactive and collaborative methods, including:
- Writing sessions
- Reflections
- Peer feedback
- Practical exercises
- Discussions in the whole group and in pairs
- Q&A rounds The bi-weekly sessions are complemented with homework to practice and deepen the course contents.
Target Audience
The course is reserved for doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Science.
Instructor Information
The course is taught by Dr. Martina Michalikova, a writing scientist with a mission to help scientists develop their writing competence. She has developed a systematic approach tailored to the needs of young researchers in natural and life science.
Workload
The total workload for the course is 30 hours, consisting of:
- 4 x 4 hours of lessons (including 3 hours of live sessions and 1 hour of video input)
- 14 hours of preliminary work and follow-up work
Special Features
- Each session is complemented with 1 hour of video input.
- Course places are allocated by lot after a 24-hour registration period.
- Full course attendance is mandatory, and participants who fail to attend without prior notification or withdraw after the registration deadline are subject to a fee.
