Program Overview
The Writing for Publication in the Social Sciences and Humanities program is a series of three workshops designed for doctoral candidates in the Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Theology of the University of Basel.
Program Details
- Duration: The program consists of three workshops, each taking place on a Thursday, from 08:30 to 15:30, on the following dates:
- April 2, 2026
- April 23, 2026
- May 7, 2026
- Registration:
- Registration begins on January 21, 2026, at 09:00
- Registration deadline is March 5, 2026, at 12:00
- Cost: The program is free of charge for eligible participants.
- ECTS Credits: 1 ECTS credit is awarded for preparing, writing, reviewing, and revising.
- Instructor: Stephan Meyer, Lecturer for academic publication and presentation at the Language Center of the University of Basel.
Program Objectives
The program aims to develop the competence of writing publications in correct, clear, coherent, and convincing language. Participants will engage in structured collaborative write review revise cycles and explore the integration of digital and AI tools into the writing process.
Program Content
- The workshops offer the opportunity to try out various writing strategies and expand the language used to relate research to existing knowledge.
- Participants will familiarize themselves with current developments in academic style and develop their competence in giving and responding to peer feedback.
- The program includes "tech swap" sessions where participants share tips on writing tools and their effective and responsible use.
Program Structure
- Participants should have a first draft or start with data and/or a concept to work on during the workshops.
- An extract from, or written abstract for, the text to be worked on must be submitted at least three weeks before the first session.
- The workshop meetings consist of short input sessions followed by cycles of writing, reviewing, and revising.
Target Audience
The program is designed for all doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Theology.
Prerequisites
Participants must submit written abstracts or extracts by Friday, March 20, 2026.
Workload
The total workload for the program is 30 hours.
Special Considerations
- The program is reserved for doctoral candidates of the specified faculties.
- Course places are allocated by lot after the initial 24-hour registration period, with subsequent registrations placed on a waiting list.
- Full course attendance is mandatory, and failure to attend without prior notification or withdrawal after the registration deadline may result in a fee and exclusion from future course registrations.
