Program Overview
Graduate Program: PhD European Global Studies
The European Institute, a leading institution in interdisciplinary teaching and research, offers the Graduate Program in European Global Studies. Members of the graduate program benefit from a distinctly inter- and transdisciplinary research environment, various formats of international teaching and research, and scientific exchange with international guest scholars. The members of the graduate program can draw on the structures created within the framework of the Katekisama Program.
The realities of our globalized and interconnected world demand innovative research strategies. Doctoral students in European Global Studies develop new theoretical and methodological approaches (such as Digital Humanities) to explore Europe in its numerous global interconnections. Currently, our doctoral students are working on topics such as the ambivalent role of citizenship in Asia and Europe in the mid-20th century, the significance of big data between democracy and authoritarianism, and the sociology and politics of European studies in the Arab world.
In the graduate program, students learn to work across disciplinary boundaries, develop an innovative dissertation project, and present it adequately. The doctoral committees are individually composed for each dissertation project, allowing for the best possible support of the research.
After successfully completing the structured doctoral program, graduates can pursue a career in science, national and international administration, business, or politics.
