Residency Training

The American Board for Certification (ABC) in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics requires that Master's degree graduates complete a residency program at an ABC-accredited facility before they can apply for certification.

After Your Master's Degree

Accredited by the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE), residency programs build on the foundation of your degree program with 12 months of structured clinical training and hands-on experience.

As a resident, you'll earn a salary ranging from $28,000 to $38,000, depending on the region of the country.

UT Southwestern's Program

UT Southwestern is one of 500 active, NCOPE-accredited residency sites that you may wish to consider as you complete your degree. Each year, residents here gain clinical experience in a variety of inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings.

Because positions in our residency program and other programs in North Texas are limited, we'll help you explore residencies nationwide and secure one that's right for you. All of our students find satisfying residency positions, often before graduation.

UT Southwestern offers residencies in both prosthetics and orthotics. The diverse nature of our practice offers residents a wide variety of experiences under the supervision of faculty that practice in the clinic and teach in the academic program. All aspects of the clinical and technical residency education are covered including research and presentations.

The program is conducted within the School of Health Professions. It involves continued interaction with orthopedic physicians and residents, as well as other medical specialties such as rehabilitation medicine, vascular and plastic surgeons, neurology, physical and occupational therapy, and many others. Affiliated programs that collaborate with the UT Southwestern Residency program are:

Applications

Expected start dates are September 1 and January 1 each year. Residents have the opportunity to work with multiple experienced clinicians at a fast-paced clinic which includes both inpatient and outpatient clinical care for a variety of patient diagnoses.
