Transplant Hepatology Fellowship

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas provides an ACGME-accredited clinical liver transplant fellowship. We are currently accepting applications for the one year position beginning July 2025 and invite gastroenterology board eligible individuals to apply.

Program Overview

UT Southwestern is one of the premier academic centers in the country and has a long history of excellence in the study of liver disease from its inception by Dr. Burton Combes in 1957. From the Nobel Prize winning team of Michael Brown, M.D. and Joseph Goldstein, M.D. to continued work by Jay Horton, M.D. UT Southwestern has been on the forefront of lipid metabolism discoveries. Our illustrious faculty include past AASLD presidents Dr. Willis Maddrey and Dr. J. Gregory Fitz.

Research Opportunities

Currently, the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases has a number of NIDDK and NIH-funded trials centered on liver disease. William Lee, M.D., heads the Acute Liver Failure Study Group and has been the principal investigator in numerous studies on viral hepatitis, Mack Mitchell, M.D., is a principle investigator for a study on alcoholic hepatitis, and Amit Singal, M.D. lead studies on the early detection and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. Our faculty is also involved in additional clinical trials on hepatitis C, autoimmune liver disease, hepatorenal syndrome, and fatty liver disease.

International Applicants

Recognizing that some of our most talented applicants are not permanent residents, we are committed to recruiting qualified international trainees. UT Southwestern accepts permanent residents or J-1 ECFMG sponsored visas. Unfortunately, the medical school does not sponsor H-1B visas.

• Fellowship Year 1: $80,299
• Fellowship Year 2: $84,095
• Fellowship Year 3 or more: $86,503
• Fellowship Year 4: $91,451

Training Opportunities

The UT Southwestern liver program serves the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex with a population over 7 million and beyond. Trainees will have broad exposure to the full gamut of liver diseases, management of the liver transplant patient, and multidisciplinary team approach in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The advanced hepatology fellow will be responsible for the care of chronic liver disease patients, performing liver transplant evaluations, and post-transplant follow-up. Upon completion of the fellowship year, the trainee will be board eligible for certification in transplant hepatology and UNOS certification.
