Update in Internal Medicine 2025 (RP2505A)

The knowledge and treatment of various disease states in internal medicine is expanding at a fast pace. Every year, new therapies are being developed, and new standards of care are employed across the spectrum of internal medicine. The busy primary care physician and internist, since they treat patients with varied diseases and comorbidities, are faced with the growing challenge of keeping abreast of the latest advances. The annual Update in Internal Medicine CME Conference seeks to assist clinicians in meeting this challenge. Our 2025 conference will feature didactic lectures, panel discussion, and interactive Q&A sessions, presented as a hybrid learning approach, offering the combination of a one-day live in-person presentation and pre-recorded on-demand presentations. The overall goal is to provide primary care physicians and internists with state-of-the-art practical advice on issues identified as frequent items for consultation and second opinions, as well as new advances in applying new scientific techniques and technologies in translational medicine.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and physical therapists in the specialty of Internal Medicine, Family Practice, and Surgery.

Learning Objectives

• Identify the role of cardiac CT angiography in the evaluation and diagnosis of patients presenting with chest pain.
• Develop an evidence-based approach to diagnosing and managing common mental health conditions in the primary care setting
• Implement an evidence-based and collaborative approach to the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal infections, including diabetes-related foot infections, by coordinating care with podiatrists, infectious disease specialists, and endocrinologists
• Describe the expanding indications for GLP-1 agonist medications in the management of metabolic conditions.
• Develop a systematic approach to the diagnosis and management of hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia to improve clinical outcomes.
• Identify the indications for non-invasive and invasive ventilation strategies in the management of chronic respiratory failure.
• Evaluate and interpret serologic and viral test results to accurately diagnose the causes of acute and chronic hepatitis.
• Identify specific examples of low-value tests and treatments in internal medicine that can be de-implemented based on current evidence and best practices.
• Develop a structured approach for the appropriate use of medical therapies and referral criteria for catheter ablation in the management of atrial fibrillation.
• Identify the appropriate indications for low-dose CT lung cancer screening in high-risk patients and understand the clinical criteria for patient selection.
