Program Overview
Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program
The Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center is designed to fulfill the general and specific requirements for orthopaedic residency according to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The program provides a comprehensive education in orthopaedic surgery, with a focus on musculoskeletal conditions and trauma.
Program Structure
The program is five years in length, with each year providing graduated exposure to a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. The program includes rotations in various orthopaedic services, including:
- Orthopaedic trauma
- Sports Medicine
- Adult Reconstruction
- Spine
- Hand and Upper Extremity
- Foot and Ankle
Rotations
The program includes the following rotations:
PGY II
- Orthopaedic trauma at Parkland Memorial Hospital
- Rotations on the Sports Medicine, Adult Reconstruction, Spine, Hand and Upper Extremity, and Foot and Ankle services
PGY III
- Six-month block on the pediatric orthopaedic services
- Rotations at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center and on the Spine Service at Zale Lipshy Pavilion - William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital and Parkland Health & Hospital System
PGY IV
- Time on the Sports Medicine Service
- Rotations on the Foot and Ankle, Night Float, Joint Reconstruction, Hand, and Spine Services
PGY V
- Time on the trauma service at Parkland Health & Hospital System
- Rotations at the VA Medical Center, and chosen electives
Education and Training
The program provides a balanced and comprehensive education, with exposure to a wide variety of elective orthopaedic surgery in a private practice type setting. The program also includes training in orthopaedic trauma, pediatric orthopaedics, and subspecialty areas such as spine, hand, foot and ankle, sports, and oncology/amputation services.
Training Objectives
The program's training objectives include providing residents with:
- Approximately 12-18 months of training in adult orthopaedics
- Approximately 9-12 months of training in pediatric orthopaedics
- Approximately 18 months of training in orthopaedic trauma
- Equal amounts of time in subspecialty areas such as spine, hand, foot and ankle, sports, and oncology/amputation services

The UT Southwestern Orthopaedic Residency Program is the only University-based orthopaedic training program in Dallas, providing a unique opportunity for residents to take advantage of the ample orthopaedic resources and opportunities in the growing metropolitan area. The program has a strong reputation for its work in orthopaedic trauma and pediatric orthopaedics, and has recently increased its recognition as a well-rounded training program in each of the orthopaedic subspecialties.
