Introduction to the Physics MPhys (Hons) Program

The Physics MPhys (Hons) program at the University of Bath is a four-year undergraduate course that provides students with a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of physics, from subatomic to cosmological scales. The program is designed to develop students' knowledge and understanding of physics, as well as their experimental, mathematical, and computational skills.

Course Structure

• Further Physics: From Neutrinos to Black Holes: 15 credits
• Mathematics for Physics 2: 10 credits

Year 3

• Advanced Classical Mechanics: 5 credits
• Advanced Quantum Mechanics: 5 credits
• MPhys/MSci Project Preparation: 5 credits
• Penultimate Year Options: 45 credits

Year 4

• MPhys/MSci Research Project: 30 credits
• Final Year Options: 30 credits

Learning and Assessment

The course uses a variety of teaching methods, including laboratory sessions, lectures, practical sessions, seminars, tutorials, and workshops. Assessment methods include closed-book written examinations, open-book written examinations, practical assessments, reports, set exercises, and visual or recorded presentations.

Professional Accreditations

The program is accredited by the Institute of Physics for the purpose of fully meeting the educational requirements for a Chartered Physicist.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the program include:

• A levels: AAA in three A levels, including Mathematics and Physics, with A in Mathematics or Physics.
• International Baccalaureate: 36 points overall, with 7, 6, 6 in three Higher Level subjects, including Physics and Mathematics.
• Other qualifications: The program also accepts other qualifications, such as BTEC, Access to HE Diploma, and international qualifications.
