Program Overview

Introduction to Integrated Design Engineering MEng (Hons)

The Integrated Design Engineering MEng (Hons) is a 5-year course with a professional placement, starting in September 2026. This course is designed for creative engineers who want to design and develop products, machines, and systems. It combines engineering studies with learning transferable skills such as complex problem-solving and critical thinking.

Course Structure

The course lasts 5 years and starts in September 2026. It includes a professional placement in the third year, which provides first-hand knowledge of working in a commercial or industrial environment. The course is made up of units of study, including compulsory units that cover core concepts and optional units that allow students to specialize in particular areas of knowledge.

Units

The course includes a range of units, such as:

  • Design, materials and manufacturing 1
  • Engineering mathematics
  • Mechatronics
  • Responsible engineering practice
  • Solid mechanics 1
  • Thermofluids 1
  • Control and mechatronics
  • Design, materials and manufacturing 2
  • Engineering computation
  • Solid mechanics 2
  • Thermofluids 2
  • Professional placement
  • Group design and business project
  • Human-centred design
  • Mechatronic design project
  • Product design and development
  • Reverse engineering
  • Design optimisation project
  • Major individual design project 1
  • Major individual design project 2
  • Final year options

Placement

The professional placement gives students first-hand knowledge of working in a commercial or industrial environment and can count towards becoming a Chartered Engineer. Over half of the students choose to take a placement, but it is not guaranteed.

Learning and Assessment

The course uses a variety of teaching and assessment methods, including laboratory sessions, lectures, online resources, practical sessions, seminars, tutorials, and workshops. Assessment methods include coursework, practical work, presentations, projects, reports, and written examinations.

Professional Accreditations

The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of demonstrating in full the underpinning knowledge and understanding required for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Recognition of Professional Qualifications

The course is recognized by professional bodies in the United Kingdom, and an accredited degree may entitle students to work in a specific profession within the UK and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the course include:

  • A levels: AAA in three A levels, including A* in Mathematics and A in Physics
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: 36 points overall, with 7, 7, 6 in three Higher Level subjects, including 6 in Physics and 7 in either HL Mathematics
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DDD in the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma, plus grade A in A level Mathematics
  • Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma: DDD* in the Cambridge Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma, plus grade A* in A level Mathematics
  • Access to HE Diploma: 42 credits at Distinction, including 12 credits from Mathematics units and 12 credits from Physics units
  • Combinations of qualifications: We accept a range of other qualifications offered in the UK, as well as combinations of typically studied qualifications

English Language Requirements

If students do not meet the English GCSE requirements, they will need a suitable English language qualification, such as IELTS, TOEFL IBT, or Cambridge English: Proficiency.

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the course are not yet available. However, students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan, and there are also scholarships and bursaries available.

Application Information

The course code is T113, and the institution code is B16. The application deadline for overseas students is January 14, 2026. Students can apply through UCAS, and the selection process usually involves an assessment of the UCAS application.
