Introduction to Integrated Design Engineering BEng (Hons)

The Integrated Design Engineering BEng (Hons) course at the University of Bath is a three-year program that combines engineering studies with learning transferable skills such as complex problem-solving and critical thinking. Year 1

  • Engineering computation: Introduces numerical and computational techniques for analysis, modeling, and simulation.
  • Solid mechanics 2: Analyses vibration of mechanical systems, torsion, and buckling of structural sections.
  • Thermofluids 2: Develops ability to apply principles of fluid dynamics and heat transfer to engineering problems.

Year 3

  • BEng individual project: Involves a demanding investigation or design project, applying learned skills and knowledge.
  • Human centred design: Introduces Human Centred Design theory, human/user research techniques, and ethical practice.
  • Mechatronic design project: Involves designing mechatronic solutions, integrating hardware with computer code.
  • Product design and development: Expands experience with tools and methods for engineering design practice.
  • Reverse engineering: Involves forensically disassembling products to create better ones for the market.

Learning and Assessment

Learning methods include laboratory sessions, lectures, online resources, practical sessions, seminars, tutorials, and workshops. Assessment methods vary between units and include coursework, practical work, presentations, projects, reports, and written examinations.


Professional Accreditations

The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), and the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of demonstrating in part the knowledge and understanding required for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
