Introduction to the Pharmacy MPharm (Hons) Program

The Pharmacy MPharm (Hons) program at the University of Bath is a four-year undergraduate course that aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional competencies required to become a pharmacist. The program is designed to reflect the revised standards for pharmacists' training set by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and includes increased placement time and a focus on developing prescribing skills.

Course Structure

The course is divided into four years, with each year comprising compulsory units that cover core concepts and optional units that allow students to specialize in particular areas of interest. The course structure is as follows:

• Year 1:
  • Fundamentals of pharmacy: health and disease (15 credits)
  • Fundamentals of pharmacy: the chemistry of drugs (15 credits)
  • Fundamentals of pharmacy: the science of medicines (15 credits)
  • Preparing for professional practice 1 (15 credits)
• Year 2:
  • Preparing for professional practice 2 (15 credits)
  • Specialised integrated unit 1: immunity, inflammation and infection and gastrointestinal disease (15 credits)
  • Specialised integrated unit 2: cardiovascular disease and endocrine disorders (10 credits)
  • Specialised integrated unit 3: management of respiratory diseases and dermatology (10 credits)
  • Specialised integrated unit 4: special patient groups and surgery (10 credits)
• Year 3:
  • Medicines optimisation and prescribing in complex patients 1 (20 credits)
  • Preparing for professional practice 3 (20 credits)
  • Specialised integrated unit 5: neurology and mental health (10 credits)
  • Specialised integrated unit 6: oncology and palliative care (10 credits)
• Year 4:
  • Global health (5 credits)
  • Medicines optimisation and prescribing in complex patients 2 (15 credits)
  • Pharmacy research project (20 credits)
  • Preparing for professional practice 4 (20 credits)

Placement

Students will undertake clinical placements throughout the four years of the course, with increased placement time in the final year. The placements will be in various settings, including community pharmacies, hospitals, and general practice.

Learning and Assessment

The course will use a variety of teaching and learning methods, including lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, and workshops. Assessment will be through a combination of examinations, coursework, and practical assessments.

Professional Accreditations

The Pharmacy MPharm (Hons) program is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which is the regulatory body for pharmacists in the UK.

Recognition of Professional Qualifications

The program is recognized by professional bodies in the UK and abroad, and graduates will be eligible to register as pharmacists in the UK and other countries.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for the program are as follows:

• A levels: AAB, including Chemistry and one other science or mathematics subject
• International Baccalaureate: 35 points overall, with 6, 6, 5 in three Higher Level subjects, including Chemistry and one other science or mathematics subject
• GCSE requirements: Mathematics grade 4 or C, English Language or Literature grade 4 or C
• English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 overall, with no less than 6.5 in all components, or equivalent

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the program are as follows:

• Home students: ｣9,250 per year
• Overseas students: ｣23,300 per year
