Introduction to Pharmacy with Preparatory Year MPharm (Hons)

The Pharmacy with Preparatory Year MPharm (Hons) is a five-year course that combines a one-year preparatory course with a four-year MPharm pharmacy course. This program is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue a career in pharmacy.

Course Structure

The course is divided into two main parts: the preparatory year and the four-year MPharm course. The preparatory year provides students with the foundational knowledge and skills required to succeed in the MPharm course.

Preparatory Year

The preparatory year consists of six units, three of which are delivered by University of Bath teaching staff and three by University of Plymouth staff. To progress to the MPharm course, students must pass all preparatory units and achieve a year overall average of at least 60%.

MPharm Course

The MPharm course is a four-year program that combines classroom learning, campus-based simulations, and placements in real healthcare settings. The course covers a range of topics, including human physiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and medicinal chemistry.

Placement

Students will undertake clinical placements in community, hospital, and GP practice settings, where they will develop their skills and gain practical experience under the supervision of expert practitioners.

Learning and Assessment

The course uses a variety of teaching and assessment methods, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratory sessions, and research projects. Assessment methods include essays, examinations, group work, oral presentations, portfolios, practical assessments, and reflective assessments.

Professional Accreditations

The MPharm course is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which is the regulatory body for pharmacists in the UK.

Recognition of Professional Qualifications

The course is recognized by professional bodies in the UK and abroad, and graduates may be eligible to work in a range of countries.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the course, students must meet certain entry requirements, which include:

• GCSE requirements: Mathematics grade 4 or C, English Language or Literature grade 4 or C
• A-level typical offer: CCC to ABB, depending on the number of science and mathematics subjects studied
• International Baccalaureate typical offer: 28 points overall, with 4, 4 in two Higher Level subjects
• Other qualifications: BTEC, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, and Access to HE Diploma

English Language Requirements

Students who do not meet the English GCSE requirements must provide a suitable English language qualification, such as IELTS or TOEFL.

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees for the course are not yet available, but students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan or other forms of funding.

Application Information

To apply for the course, students must submit an application through UCAS, which includes a personal statement and declaration of any relevant spent or unspent criminal convictions.

Selection Process

The selection process includes an interview and a Fitness to Practise self-declaration form, which must be completed as part of the interview process.

Progression from Preparatory Year to Year 1

To progress from the preparatory year to year 1 of the MPharm course, students must pass all preparatory units and achieve a year overall average of at least 60%.

Immigration Requirements

Students who require a Student visa to study in the UK are not eligible for this course. EU or EEA nationals (except Irish citizens) must have Settled or Pre-Settled status in the UK to join the course.
