Program Overview

Introduction to Chemical Engineering MEng (Hons)

The Chemical Engineering MEng (Hons) course at the University of Bath is a 5-year program that includes a professional placement. This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of chemical engineering principles and practices, as well as the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting.

Course Structure

The course is divided into five years, with the first two years focusing on the fundamentals of chemical engineering, including material and energy balances, reaction engineering, separations processes, fluid flow, mass and heat transfer. The third year builds on this foundation, covering more advanced topics such as process dynamics, modeling, and control. The fourth year is dedicated to a professional placement, where students can gain practical experience in the industry. The final year includes advanced core chemical engineering and a research project.

Year 1

  • Chemical Engineering Skills, Practice, and Design 1: This unit introduces students to basic experimentation skills, safety, instrumentation, and control in chemical and biochemical engineering.
  • Principles of Chemical Engineering 1: This unit covers the diverse principles that chemical engineers need to understand, develop, and design efficient and sustainable industrial-scale production.
  • Professional Portfolio 1: Students record and reflect on the professional and transferable skills developed in the first year.
  • Science and Mathematics for Chemical Engineering: This unit provides the core science and mathematics needed to become a chemical engineer.

Year 2

  • Chemical Engineering Skills, Practice, and Design 2: Students work in small groups, exploring further tools for assessing safety and ethical considerations in decision-making.
  • Principles of Chemical Engineering 2: This unit expands students' knowledge of chemical engineering principles, covering more advanced aspects such as reaction engineering, separation processes, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and solids handling.
  • Process Dynamics, Modeling, and Control: Students learn to apply modeling to chemical engineering concepts and processes.
  • Professional Portfolio 2: Students continue to record and reflect on their professional and transferable skills.

Year 3

  • Advanced Principles of Chemical Engineering: Students apply advanced principles to complex systems, often in the context of uncertainty.
  • Environmental and Engineering Project Management: This unit covers core business and environmental aspects of the chemical engineering profession.
  • Product and Process Design (Group): Students investigate the production of a product and design the plant to manufacture it, considering culture and ethics.
  • Product and Process Design (Individual): Building on the group project, students design an individual process unit in detail.

Year 4

  • Professional Placement: Students undertake a professional placement, enhancing their CV, gaining valuable new skills, or trying out a career option.

Year 5

  • Advanced Core Chemical Engineering: Students build on their knowledge of chemical and biochemical engineering principles by studying more advanced elements.
  • MEng Research Project in Chemical Engineering: Students engage in open research, planning, controlling, and completing an experimental or theoretical/computational project aligned with the Department's research.
  • Final Year Options: Students choose two 10-credit optional units from proposed options, which may include healthcare engineering, advanced materials, multiscale modeling, and energy technology.
