Program Overview
The Undergraduate Program in English Literature is comprised of compulsory and elective courses that, in combination with courses from other departments, lead to the acquisition of a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature. The program's curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, allowing students to choose authors, themes, or historical periods according to their interests.
Program Objectives
The primary objective of the Department is to develop students' critical thinking and ability to connect literary and cultural texts with the historical and social context of the author's time, as well as with current reality. The program aims to promote expertise in areas such as information retrieval, legitimate and ethical use of online sources, and specialized electronic communication.
Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the compulsory and elective courses in English Literature, students will have acquired:
- A broad knowledge of the history of literature and culture, with an emphasis on British literature and culture
- The ability to critically read a wide range of literary texts and relate them to their cultural and historical context
- Reading and analysis skills (both oral and written) for different types of artistic discourse (literature, theater, film) that promote understanding of multiculturalism in English-language literatures worldwide
- The ability to think autonomously and critically
- The ability to flexibly and skillfully use literary critical and theoretical terms in text analysis
- The ability to effectively and legitimately/ethically use information technology in research
- A disposition towards promoting lifelong learning (for themselves and others) to achieve personal and professional goals
- The ability to compare different cultures and, through an enriched perspective, contribute positively to their own culture
Curriculum
The program's curriculum includes compulsory and elective courses that cover a wide range of subjects, allowing students to choose according to their interests. Although the emphasis is on British literature, the curriculum also includes authors from the British Commonwealth and countries of the former British Empire.
