Program Overview


Programme of Study

The Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program of Studies "Sports and Health" is offered by the School of Medicine and the School of Physical Education and Sport Science of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The main aim of the program is to study and research the application and adjustment of physical exercise on human performance.


Program Description

The program has two streams: Sports Medicine and Physical Exercise and Health. Some of the subjects of study of the MSc program are:


  • The prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of sports injuries
  • Cardio-respiratory and pathological diseases
  • Maximizing athletic performance
  • Therapeutic gymnastics
  • Managing musculoskeletal pain through exercise programs

Qualification Awarded

The qualification awarded is a Postgraduate degree in Sports and Health.

Specific Admission Requirements

  • PTYCHIO (Degree from a University in Greece or from a recognized foreign institution of equivalent status or from a Technological Education Institute) in Medicine, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Nursing, or a similar field

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

To obtain their qualification from the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Study Programme "Sports and Health", graduate students have to successfully complete the 4 semesters that correspond to 120 ECTS. Graduate students have to attend and complete successfully the exams of the courses (basic knowledge, scientific area, and skill development) that are distributed as follows:


  • 1st semester (30 ECTS)
  • 2nd semester (30 ECTS)
  • 3rd semester (30 ECTS)
  • 4th semester (30 ECTS), where they have to complete their Master Thesis, which they defend in public

Aim of the Program

The aim of this postgraduate program is to promote ongoing specialized scientific knowledge and to provide a high-level education concerning the applications of medical science in sport, as well as the effect of sports on the human body.

  • The presentation, evaluation, and rehabilitation of sports injuries
  • Pathological and cardiopulmonary conditions
  • The maximization of athletic performance
  • Therapeutic physical exercise
  • The management of musculoskeletal pain through exercising

Student Introduction

The students of the post-graduate program "Sports and Health" are firstly introduced to the basics of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, of Anatomy, and of Sports medicine. Afterwards, they can broaden their knowledge in more specialized subjects of medical science and its applications in sports.

  • Ergophysiology
  • Biomechanics
  • Athletic Cardiology
  • Pathology and Nutrition of athletes
  • Doping
  • Rehabilitation programs
  • The role of exercise in the prevention of several conditions
  • How to apply sports in chronic patients or disabled people
  • Other subjects of Sports Medicine, through a series of lectures and workshops

Thesis

Finally, every student can choose the topic that they will study more exclusively for their thesis.


Professional Status

Professional qualification is not applicable in the public or private sector.


Access to Further Studies

The qualification is a terminal award and allows access to doctoral studies.


Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

A scale of 1 to 10 applies to the marks of each subject in the Hellenic Higher Education. The grading scheme for the qualification of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Study Program follows the distribution:


  • Άριστα (Arista) Excellent: 8.50 - 10.00
  • Λίαν Καλώς (Lian Kalos) Very Good: 6.50 - 8.49
  • Καλώς (Kalos) Good: 6.00 - 6.49
  • Ανεπιτυχώς (Anepitychos) Fail: 0.00 - 5.99
  • Minimum passing grade: 6 (AUTH Rule of Procedure Α.Π.Θ., no 127/2-2-11)

Graduation Requirements

  • 4 SEMESTERS, 120 ECTS
  • A full academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS units and each semester to 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) (1 ECTS = 25-30 hours of workload)
