Program Overview

Introduction to the Master's Program in Sciences Historiques de la Culture

The Master's program in Sciences Historiques de la Culture is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the historical and cultural context of modern and contemporary phenomena. The program aims to equip students with the necessary scientific instruments to analyze and critically evaluate the developments of cultural phenomena in the world.

Objectives

The program pursues a double objective:

  • To allow students to deepen their historical and critical consciousness of the problems posed by the developments of cultural phenomena in the modern and contemporary world, and to encourage them to acquire the mastery of the scientific instruments necessary for their analysis.
  • To open up cross-questioning on the forms of representation and communication that are texts, fixed images, and moving images, as well as sound media.

Content

The program proposes two orientations, which can also be combined:

  • One towards a first research experience, establishing a bridge between the Master's degree and the doctorate.
  • The other towards a pre-professional activity through the realization of a personal project associated with the training objectives.

Public Target

This program is primarily aimed at students enrolled in the Master's degree in Letters at the University of Lausanne who are following, as their main discipline, the history and aesthetics of cinema, French, art history, or history. In certain cases, duly motivated and evaluated by the teachers, students who have followed one of these disciplines as a secondary discipline may be allowed to enroll in this program.

Admission and Registration

For Students Enrolled in the Master's Program in Letters at the University of Lausanne

Students enrolled in the Master's program in Letters at the University of Lausanne can register for a specialization program in order to obtain a Master's degree in Letters with a specialization (120 ECTS credits). The conditions for admission and the registration procedure are detailed in the Dean's directive 0.3bis, which should be read in priority.

To be able to register for a specialization program, the student must:

  • Have completed the integrated upgrading program, if they were subject to it at the time of their enrollment in the Master's program.
  • Be able to complete the specialization program within the maximum duration of studies.

Registration is done at the Secretariat of the Faculty of Letters. If it takes place while enrollments in courses are still open, the student can follow the program from the current semester; otherwise, they will be able to start the program in the following semester.

For Students Not Enrolled at the University of Lausanne

Students who have obtained a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Letters, at the University of Lausanne or elsewhere, can register for a specialization program in order to obtain an attestation of ECTS credits. The deadline for registration is fixed at April 30th for the autumn semester of the same year or November 30th for the spring semester of the following year.

In all cases, the student must proceed with the registration formalities at the University of Lausanne's Registration and Enrollment Service and with the registration formalities at the Secretariat of the Faculty of Letters.
