Program Overview

Introduction to the Bachelor's Program in Sciences of Movement and Sport

The Bachelor's program in Sciences of Movement and Sport is a multidisciplinary course of study that explores the various levels of a phenomenon that is simultaneously biological, physiological, psychological, social, historical, and economic.

Presentation

The program analyzes the constraints imposed by internal processes, whether biological or mental, on human behavior. It also examines the sport as a phenomenon with repercussions on local and national economies and political life. Through the study of various disciplines in the humanities, the program shows how these constraints can be partially overcome by appropriate education.

Formation

The Bachelor's program in Sciences of Movement and Sport consists of a major discipline, the Major in Sciences of Movement and Sport, and a minor discipline, the Minor, which is chosen by the student. Admission to the program is subject to passing a preliminary physical aptitude exam. The program allows students to acquire fundamental knowledge in biological sciences and humanities related to physical activity and sport.

Choice of Minor

The minor allows students to broaden their main training by acquiring knowledge in a neighboring discipline. Although some minors may facilitate access to certain outlets or better prepare students for specific Masters programs, the major remains the primary orientation and therefore plays a predominant role. Regardless of the choice of minor, all orientations of the UNIL Master's program in Sciences of Movement and Sport are accessible to holders of a Bachelor's degree in Sciences of Movement and Sport.

  • Mineure en psychologie (Faculte SSP)
  • Mineure en science politique
  • Mineure en sciences sociales
  • Mineure en geographie (Faculte des GSE)
  • Disciplines enseignables (Faculte des Lettres)
  • Mineure proposee par l'Universite de Geneve (UniGE)
  • Mineure en physiologie (Ecole de biologie - FBM)
  • Mineure en Management (HEC)

Professional Perspectives

Studies at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences offer study plans with great possibilities for opening up. This is why holders of a degree in Sciences of Movement and Sport exercise various activities and are found in many professional sectors. Except for a few specialized fields that require diplomas from a particular branch (teaching, for example), the content of these activities is not necessarily directly related to the discipline studied.

Sectors of Activity

  • Public and private schools: teaching physical education and another branch
  • Private companies: for example, teaching physical activities within a company, organizing and managing sports camps, sports and health centers, fitness
  • Rehabilitation centers, hospitals, specialized institutions, EMS
  • Sports associations and federations: training, management, consulting, communication
  • Public sports services
  • Tourism offices

Preliminary Physical Aptitude Exam

Before starting university studies in Sciences of Movement and Sport, students must pass a preliminary physical aptitude exam organized before the academic year begins. This exam tests the following aptitudes: movement education, gymnastics, ball games, athletics, and swimming. In case of failure, students cannot begin studies in Sciences of Movement and Sport. A second and final attempt is authorized during a subsequent academic year.

Studies and Elite Sport

UNIL offers measures to accommodate elite athletes. Deadline for requesting elite athlete status: April 30th.

Point of View

According to Professor Denis Hauw, Associate Professor in Sports Psychology, studies in Sports Science are multidisciplinary and require both academic and sports skills. Students must be able to open up to different fields ranging from life sciences to human and social sciences, which does not mobilize the same work resources. They must also have a good level in multiple sports practices. The diversity of courses offered in Sports Science therefore requires good versatility in terms of working methods and physical and sports abilities.
