Program Overview

The Civil Engineering Master's programme is a jointly offered degree by Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, École Centrale de Lyon (ECL), INSA Lyon, and École Nationale d'Ingenieurs de Saint-Étienne (ENISE). The programme includes a fully shared M1 year that provides access to all M2 pathways.


Program Structure

The first year (M1) is common to all M2 pathways within the Civil Engineering programme. This initial year focuses on acquiring fundamental knowledge in:


  • Fluid mechanics and energy
  • Structural mechanics
  • Vibrations
  • Materials and structures
  • Geotechnics
  • Building thermics

Specialisation begins in the second semester, when students choose from several options:


  • Economics
  • Law
  • Environmental physics
  • Structural stability
  • Geotechnics and environment

M2 Pathways

The five research-oriented specialisations of the Civil Engineering Master's programme (MEGA) consist of six teaching units (UEs), each comprising:


  • 6 hours of lectures
  • 10 hours of tutorials
  • 20 hours of practical work
  • Or alternatively 8 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials
  • Depending on the nature of the subject
  • Each unit is worth 6 ECTS

The programme also includes:


  • A 27-hour language course (3 ECTS)
  • A documentary research unit
  • A professional communication unit
  • It concludes with a compulsory 16-week internship

Admission Criteria

To be eligible for the programme, candidates should:


  • Have a level L3 scientific or L3 Civil Engineering degree
  • Have knowledge in:
    • Mechanics of structures
    • Fluid mechanics
    • Materials
  • Have a level L3 in Mathematics (linear algebra, matrix calculation, analysis, etc.)
  • Understand technical French language at level B2

The programme has a capacity of 60 students in M1. The application campaign runs from February 17, 2026, to March 16, 2026, with the examination of applications taking place from March 23, 2026, to May 29, 2026, for initial training, and from March 23, 2026, to April 27, 2026, for alternating training. Candidates will be notified of the response on June 3, 2026, for initial training, and on April 30, 2026, for alternating training.
