Program Overview

Program Overview

The University Claude Bernard Lyon 1 offers an innovative license program in chemistry, allowing students to complete their third year in an alternating pattern between the university and the business world. This program guarantees, upon successful completion, the same general license diploma as that awarded to non-apprentice students.

Program Description

The L3 Chemistry program is a comprehensive and generalist formation in the various disciplinary fields of chemistry. The objective is to provide students with solid fundamental knowledge, technical skills, and professional skills in the different areas of chemistry: organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical, theoretical, materials, and polymers. This profile of a multidisciplinary chemist offers the possibility of varied and evolving missions in the enterprise.

Competences Attested

Disciplinary Competences

  • Mobilize adequate concepts and technologies to approach and solve problems in the different domains of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry.
  • Mobilize essential mathematical, physical, and computer science concepts within the framework of chemistry problems.
  • Identify and autonomously conduct the different stages of an experimental approach.
  • Use common laboratory equipment and measurement techniques in the domains of organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry.
  • Interpret experimental data to consider their modeling.
  • Validate a model by comparing its predictions to experimental results and appreciate its limits of validity.
  • Identify error sources to calculate uncertainty on an experimental result.
  • Manipulate fundamental mechanisms at the microscopic scale, model macroscopic phenomena, and relate a macroscopic phenomenon to microscopic processes.
  • Exploit data acquisition and analysis software with a critical spirit.
  • Use the main synthesis and purification techniques.
  • Identify specific regulations and implement primary prevention measures in terms of hygiene and safety.

Transversal and Linguistic Competences

  • Use reference numerical tools and computer security rules to acquire, process, produce, and disseminate information, as well as to collaborate internally and externally.
  • Identify and select various specialized resources to document a subject.
  • Analyze and synthesize data for their exploitation.
  • Develop an argumentation with a critical spirit.
  • Easily use the different registers of written and oral expression of the French language.
  • Easily use written and oral comprehension and expression in at least one foreign living language.

Pursuit of Studies

At the end of this course, students are diploma holders of the chemistry license. They can naturally continue in a Master's program in all disciplines of chemistry, in initial training or in alternation. This is one of the major differences with a professional license (LPro and BUT), whose finality is primarily professional integration at the end of three years of study.

Evaluation Modalities

The evaluation modalities are decided annually by the Administrative Council, on the proposal of the Council of Studies and University Life. Evaluations are carried out throughout the year in the form of written, oral, practical case, defense, report, and evaluation of professional skills.

Specificities and Prerequisites

Prerequisites for integrating the training: BAC + 2 in chemistry.

Target Audience

Students who have validated a second year of chemistry license. Holders of a BUT or a BTS, specialty chemistry, can also access it based on their results and the finality of their professional project.

Access Modalities

How to Apply

The annual intake of this training is 18 students maximum. This alternating course has a limited number of places and is therefore selective: pre-selected candidates will have a motivation interview to verify the synergy between the profile, the professional project, and the ability to lead a university and business course.

Responsibility of the Course

The course is managed by Anne-Julie BOUGRINE, with the Faculty of Sciences: Department of Chemistry being the responsible university component.

Commentary on Integration

At the end of this course, students obtain a national diploma of chemistry license. They can naturally continue in a Master's program in all disciplines of chemistry, in initial training or in alternation. The professional integration into the chemical industries, environment, materials is possible, if the student wishes, as a chemical technician in the laboratory or production, in research and development, in maintenance, Hygiene Safety Environment, or as an Assistant Engineer chemist.

National Directory of Professional Certifications (RNCP)

The program is listed in the RNCP.

Information on Alternation

Alternation is an opportunity to benefit from the best of both worlds: a sharp scientific and technical training, coupled with the acquisition of professional skills at the heart of business realities. It allows for early professionalization, the application of theoretical teachings, and the orientation and precision of the pursuit of studies project. Alternation ensures a professional future with an excellent integration rate and facilitates the search for a master's alternation contract.

Statute of Apprentice

The apprentice status presents many advantages for students. During their alternation, the apprentice benefits from a salaried status, with all associated rights and duties. They are paid (between 43% and 53% of the SMIC according to their age, at a minimum), contribute to retirement, and benefit from unemployment benefits if they do not find a job immediately after their training. In return, the student's presence at the university during teachings is mandatory. The company has the obligation to train the apprentice: a master of apprenticeship supervises each alternate in their missions, facilitates their integration, and accompanies them in acquiring the skills of the diploma. A pedagogical tutor also ensures the link between the university and the company.
