Program Overview

Program Overview

The University of Lyon 1 offers a Professional License in the field of Science and Technology, with a focus on Industrial Careers: Design and Processing of Materials. This program has been in existence since 2000 and has evolved to adapt to new industrial methods and techniques.

Program Description

The program aims to train technical managers responsible for projects in design offices (plastic and mold makers) and production workshops in the tooling industry for plastics processing. Students will become specialists in CAD/CAM applied to tooling for transforming plastic materials, with a strong understanding of design and transformation of plastic parts.

Program Structure

The program is a one-year course (level L3) that takes place from September to September, with a minimum of 600 hours of training, including 150 hours of tutored projects. The total internship time is 16 weeks minimum (29 weeks for apprenticeship students). The program is taught in collaboration with the University of Lyon 1 and the Arbez Carme High School (Oyonnax), with classes held on both sites.

Competencies

The program develops general competencies such as:

  • Studying the feasibility of a technical solution without breaking the computer chain
  • Solving a technical and financial problem with a scientific approach
  • Designing tools and parts using CAD/CAM tools
  • Applying basic notions of communication and human resource management
  • Leading and managing a project

Specific competencies for the program include:

  • Mechanics: defining the constituent elements and the realization process
  • Mechanics: evaluating results during and at the end of realization
  • Mechanics/Materials: mastering the basics of mathematics involved in mechanics and materials science

Evaluation

Evaluation is based on continuous assessment, reports, and oral presentations (final project and tutored projects). The awarding of the diploma requires an average grade in all 7 units of study, with corresponding coefficients for the number of ECTS credits.

Admission

Admission is based on a file review. The application file must be submitted through the eCandidat platform. A first admission committee meets in mid-May to assess academic abilities. If the response is positive, students must then find a company to sponsor their internship.

Public Concerned

Recruitment is at the Bac+2 level, with the following backgrounds:

  • BTS in technological and scientific training
  • DUT in Materials Science and Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and Production
  • L2 in Engineering Sciences, Mechanics, or Physics and Chemistry

Responsibilities

The program is managed by the Department of Chemistry, with Mr. Rene Fulchiron as the program director.

Unit of Study

The program consists of 7 units of study:

  • Implementation of Polymers (6 ECTS)
  • Mechanics and Materials Science (9 ECTS)
  • Tool Design (6 ECTS)
  • Tool Realization (9 ECTS)
  • Transversal and Linguistic Competencies (9 ECTS)
  • Tutored Projects (6 ECTS)
  • Mission in a Professional Environment (15 ECTS)

Career Opportunities

This program trains students for careers such as:

  • Assistant Production Engineer
  • Industrial Sales Representative
  • Project Manager
  • Designer
  • Plastics Engineer
  • CAO Project Manager
  • Production Manager
  • Methods Manager
  • Test Technician
  • Optimization Process Technician
