Program Overview

The Diplôme d'Université (DU) in Expertise Judiciaire, Psychiatrique et Psychologique is a university diploma program offered by the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. The program is offered every two years, with the next academic year starting in 2026/2027. The program duration is one year, with a total of 63 hours of theoretical teaching and 19 hours of practical teaching. The program also includes a 30-hour stage.


Objectives

The program aims to provide students with the following knowledge and skills:

  • Know the expectations of experts in psychiatric and psychological expertise
  • Understand the stages of the procedure: pre-sentencing, trial, and post-sentencing
  • Improve clinical practice with authors of violence
  • Identify criminological categories
  • Understand the concepts of discernment, dangerousness, and risk
  • Evaluate penal responsibility
  • Evaluate the risk of committing violent acts
  • Practice penal expertise
  • Harmonize practices with references and peers

Admission Criteria

The program is open to:


  • Psychiatrists and doctors practicing or wishing to practice psychiatric expertise
  • Clinical psychologists
  • Interns in psychiatry or students enrolled in the DIU of general psychiatry in their final year of study The selection of candidates is based on their professional experience and motivation to become experts. A minimum of 15 students is required to open the program, with a maximum of 25 students.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the program are:


  • 904 for initial training
  • 1500 for continuing education, individual or employer-funded

Evaluation

The evaluation of the program is based on:


  • Attendance at teaching sessions (mandatory)
  • Continuous assessment (written, 30 points)
  • Realization of a stage
  • Submission of expertise reports (10 points)
  • Oral examination (20 points) The validation of the diploma is acquired with 30 points out of 60.

Specificities and Prerequisites

The written agreement of the teaching manager must be attached to the registration file. The program is offered every two years, alternating with the DU in Psychiatrie Légale.
