Program Overview

The University of Lyon 1 offers a Diploma of University Studies (DU) in Thanatopraxie, a program designed to prepare students for the national thanatopraxie competition. This program does not lead to a professional license in thanatopraxie but rather provides theoretical and practical training in the field.


Program Details

  • Duration: 2 semesters
  • Total Volume Horaire: Minimum 195 hours
  • Language of Instruction: French
  • Location: Lyon Est (Lyon 8čme) - campus Rockefeller
  • Tuition Fees:
    • Individual funding: 3900
    • Employer funding: 3900
  • Practical Training: For students admitted to the written part of the national competition, a practical training of 100 conservation care sessions is required, at a cost of 178 (excluding CVEC).

Admission Criteria

  • Age: Minimum 18 years old
  • Diploma: Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • Selection Test: Mandatory and free, requires sending a CV and a letter of motivation
  • Oral Examination: Part of the selection process, held on a specified date

Evaluation Methods

  • Theoretical Teaching: 190 hours
  • Practical Teaching: 75 care sessions (for the second year, if admitted to the written part of the national competition)
  • Evaluation of the Selection Test: CV and letter of motivation, followed by an oral interview
  • DU Evaluation:
    • Written exam (QCM and questions) on thanatopraxie, funeral regulation, business management, human sciences of death, hygiene, and safety
    • Oral exam
