Program Overview

The Diplôme Inter-Universitaire (DIU) in Spine Surgery is a two-year program that aims to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge in spine surgery. The program is offered by several universities in partnership, including Bordeaux 2, Lille 2, Paris Sorbonne, Paris Nord, Strasbourg, Marseille, and Nice.

Program Description

The program consists of 6 seminars, each lasting 21 hours, spread over 3 days (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday), and 6 training sites. The seminars cover various topics in spine surgery, including theoretical and practical aspects. The program also includes a module on complications in spine surgery and a practical stage of 40 hours.

Objectives

The objective of the program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose and treat spine-related pathologies, prescribe and interpret complementary exams, and propose appropriate therapeutic measures. The program also aims to enable students to master basic and advanced surgical gestures and to orient patients towards the most competent structures for rare and complex pathologies.

Target Audience

The program is open to:

• Chirurgiens orthopedistes traumatologues and neurochirurgiens with a French state doctorate degree or a degree from a European Union country
• Chirurgiens pediatres with an orthopedic orientation
• Internes de specialite in surgery (DES de chirurgie generale, DESC d'orthopedie et traumatologie, de chirurgie infantile with an orthopedic orientation, and de neurochirurgie) having validated 6 semesters of internship, including at least 4 semesters in a surgical specialty (orthopedics or neurosurgery)
• Inscrits en DFMSA de chirurgie orthopedique et traumatologique or de neurochirurgie having validated 8 semesters of internship, including at least 5 semesters in a surgical specialty (orthopedics or neurosurgery)

Admission Criteria

Admission to the program requires:

• A written agreement from the teaching supervisor
• A dossier de candidature to be submitted to the pedagogical supervisor
• An individual interview with the pedagogical supervisor
• Validation of the application by the pedagogical supervisor within the limit of available places

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for the program are:

• 704 for initial training
• 1700 for continuing education (individual or employer-funded)

Evaluation

The evaluation of the program includes:

• Assiduity, which is obligatory and conditions the authorization to pass the exams
• A written exam at the end of the first and second years
• A practical stage to be validated
• A memoir to be written and submitted before the second session
