The Diplôme Inter-Universitaire (DIU) in Health is a postgraduate program offered by the University of Lyon 1 in collaboration with other universities. The program focuses on the practice and theory of electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Description of the Formation

The objective of this teaching is to provide participants with a set of knowledge, methods, and skills to effectively contribute to the care of patients treated with ECT or rTMS for psychiatric pathologies. This includes knowing the indications and contraindications of these treatments, recognizing and measuring undesirable effects, transmitting adapted information for consent collection, and participating in improving the therapeutic alliance.

Teaching Program

• Theoretical Teaching: 86.75 hours
• Stage: 30 hours (independent of the practical workshop realized during the formation sessions)
• The total practical and theoretical teaching, stage, and supervision for memoirs represent 116.75 hours.

Organization of Teaching

The theoretical teaching will take place in three distinct sessions of 3 days each, the first in Bordeaux and the second in Lyon. Practical encadrement will be provided during the stage.

Pedagogical Methods and Tools

• Theoretical teaching based on recent literature data and national and international practice recommendations.
• Practical encadrement during the stage.
• Group case analyses (each trainee will present three clinical cases from their stage).
• Follow-up of adapted indicators with the specific function and role of each student.
• Role-playing (information and consent collection).

Evaluation Modalities

• Assiduity: Mandatory, conditions the authorization to pass exams.
• Written Exam: 1 anonymous exam, 2 hours, noted on 20.
• Practical Exam: Corresponding to the stage.
• Memoir: 20 pages on a specific problem related to ECT or rTMS (oral defense), noted on 20.
• Conditions for Obtaining the Diploma: Students who obtain the average in writing, the average in the memoir during the oral defense, and validate the practical stage are declared admitted.

Public Concerned

The program is aimed at:

• Doctors of medicine, holders of the DES in psychiatry or anesthesiology-reanimation.
• Interns in DES of psychiatry or anesthesiology-reanimation from the 3rd year.
• Holders of the State Diploma of nursing, psychologists holding a Master 2 or a DESS.
• Foreign doctors holding an equivalent diploma.

Capacity and Selection

• Minimum Capacity on Lyon 1: 10 (below which the diploma will not open).
• Maximum Capacity on Lyon 1: 20.
• Total Minimum Capacity: 20 (below which the diploma will not open).
• Total Maximum Capacity: 40.
• Selection is based on a dossier (motivation letter + CV) and possibly a pre-interview with the local teaching coordinator. The request for registration will be addressed to the local responsible for the formation. A pedagogical committee will collect all registration requests to allow for an equitable distribution between the two universities.
