Program Overview
Program Overview
The University of Swansea offers a Ph.D. and MPhil program in Physics, providing students with the opportunity to engage in research projects over two years (MPhil) or three years (PhD). The program is supported by the university's world-class researchers and facilities.
Research Areas
The university has three main research groups:
- Ffiseg a Deunyddiau Cymhwysol (Applied Physics and Materials)
- Next-generation solar cells
- Materials and devices for photodetection
- Next-generation semiconductor physics
- Bioelectroneg
- Biosensor materials for medical applications
- Grwp Ffiseg Atomig, Moleciwlaidd a Quantwm (Atomic, Molecular, and Quantum Physics Group)
- Antihydrogen, positronium, and positrons
- Quantum control of atoms and optical quantum mechanics
- Ultrafast dynamics and imaging
- Quantum computing and simulation
- Grwp Theori Ffiseg a Cosmology (Theoretical Physics and Cosmology Group)
- Integrability and AdS/CFT
- Holography and high-energy particle physics
- Theoretical cosmology
- Amplitudes in gauge and gravity theories
Admission Requirements
The university considers applications from students with a wide range of qualifications. Typically, a minimum of a second-class upper division honors degree or equivalent in physics or a related field, or a relevant master's degree with merit, is required. English language proficiency is also necessary, with an IELTS score of 6.5 (with at least 6.0 in each component) or equivalent.
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees for the program vary depending on the start date and mode of study. For the 2025-2026 academic year, the fees are:
- Ph.D. full-time: Ł5,006 (UK) / Ł24,550 (international)
- Ph.D. part-time: Ł2,503 (UK) / Ł12,300 (international)
- MPhil full-time: Ł5,006 (UK) / Ł24,550 (international)

Additional Costs
Students may incur additional costs during their studies, including:
- Travel to and from the campus
- Printing, photocopying, and binding costs
- Purchase of books or course materials
- Graduation ceremony attire
Supervision
Students will be supervised by experienced researchers in their chosen field. The university has a strong research focus, with notable alumni, including Professor Lyn Evans, the leader of the Large Hadron Collider project at CERN.
Funding and Scholarships
The university offers various funding opportunities, including scholarships and bursaries. Students may also be eligible for government funding or other external sources of support. The university's website provides more information on available funding opportunities.
Program Structure
The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive research experience, including:
- Participation in research activities, such as seminars, workshops, and laboratory work
- Contribution to one of the university's established research groups
- Access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment
Language Support
The university offers support for students who wish to study through the medium of Welsh or bilingually. Scholarships and bursaries are available for students who choose to study in Welsh.
