Engineering Doctorate at Swansea University

The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is an alternative to the traditional PhD that combines the intellectual challenge of a PhD whilst gaining valuable industrial experience. As a Research Engineer (EngD student), your research will be industry-led and your project will involve working with a company.

What is an Engineering Doctorate (EngD)?

The EngD scheme was established by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to provide ambitious and motivated graduates with doctorate-level training, putting new ideas into practice and progressing careers to reach senior positions in industry.

Research Areas

Our EngD projects are focused on the theme of functional coatings, covering the full cycle of products, from substrate preparation, formulation & functionalisation, deposition, durability and end of life. The EngD is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining on behalf of the Engineering Council and will count towards your journey to Chartered Engineer Status.
