Program Overview


Introduction to the HBNE Certificate Program

The HBNE (Higher Education for Sustainable Development) certificate program is designed to support educators in incorporating aspects of sustainability into their teaching practices. The program aims to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and its implementation in higher education.


Program Structure

The program is divided into four modules, each with a distinct focus:


  • Module I: Basics of higher education for sustainable development (Foundations of Higher Education for Sustainable Development)
  • Module II: Central Educational and Sustainability Discourses
  • Module III: Practical methods and concepts for teaching in the context of ESD (Practical Methods and Concepts for Teaching in the Context of ESD)
  • Module IV: Transferring ESD topics and methods into one's own teaching practice (Transferring ESD Topics and Methods into One's Own Teaching Practice)

Target Audience

The program is open to all educators at the University of Würzburg who are actively involved in teaching and wish to integrate sustainability aspects into their curriculum.


Program Duration and Flexibility

While it is recommended to complete the program within three semesters, participants have the flexibility to adjust the pace according to their individual needs and time constraints.


Cost and Recognition

Participation in the program is free of charge for educators at the University of Würzburg. The courses attended can also be recognized as part of other certificate programs, such as the Certificate in University Teaching.
