The Doctoral Program in Maritime and Transport Studies is designed to educate independent researchers with broad professional and in-depth methodological knowledge, enabling them to perform independent and creative scientific research and development work in the fields of maritime and transport studies.

About the Program
The program combines knowledge of integral technical-technological systems and processes in maritime, transport, and transport logistics. The need for a high-quality and modern doctoral study program for acquiring appropriate knowledge in the field of transport and maritime sciences is also dictated by the extremely dynamic development, which, under the influence of globalization processes in global conditions, is one of the most important economic activities and represents the driving force of the entire socio-economic progress.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the Doctoral Program in Maritime and Transport Studies, candidates must have completed:
- A second-cycle study program, regardless of the direction and field of study.
- A unified master's study program that educates for professions regulated by European Union directives, if evaluated with 300 ECTS, or another unified master's study program evaluated with 300 ECTS.
- A study program for acquiring university education, adopted before June 11, 2004.
- A study program for acquiring specialization, having previously completed a higher professional study program in the field of maritime-transport-transport logistics and natural science, technical, and social science orientations. Additional study obligations for individual areas in the range of 30 to 60 ECTS are determined by the Commission for Doctoral Studies UL FPP for candidates before enrolling in the doctoral study program.
- A study program for acquiring a master's degree in science or specialization, having previously completed a university study program in the field of maritime-transport-transport logistics and natural science, technical, economic orientations. Candidates are recognized for study obligations in the amount of 60 ECTS.
Selection Criteria
The selection of candidates will be based on:
- Success in the second-cycle study program (average grade, grade of the master's thesis).
- Success in the selective examination, determined by the study program.
- Achievements in the scientific and professional field.
The selection of candidates will be based on:
- Average grade of study (15%).
- Grade of the diploma or master's thesis (5%).
- Success in the selective examination (80%), which consists of a written examination in the field of maritime and transport studies.
A candidate can replace 40% of the grade of the written examination with the grade of their current scientific and professional work in the field of the study program.
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees and other costs for enrollment in doctoral study programs are published in the price list for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Information Day
An Information Day will be held on May 29, 2025, at 18:00 in the AMFI lecture hall at the UL Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport, Pot pomorakov 4, Portoro, and will also be broadcast online (the link will be published on this website).
