Program Overview


Master in Design

The Master's Programme in Design at the University of Bergen is a highly competitive program that requires a completed Bachelor's Degree in Design or other relevant field of study. The program is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in design, with a focus on visual communication, furniture and spatial design, and interior architecture.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:


  • A completed Bachelor's Degree in Design or other relevant field of study, amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits, normally of 4 years duration.
  • Documentation of English language proficiency, as the program is taught in English.
  • A Letter of Motivation, project description, and documentation of relevant design-related work (portfolio) must be submitted as part of the application.

Academic Requirements

The academic requirements for the program include:


  1. A Bachelor's Degree in Design, normally of minimum 4 years duration, from a recognized university or university college.
  2. Documentation of English language proficiency, which can be demonstrated through an internationally recognized English test.

Language Requirement

Applicants who are not native English speakers must document their proficiency in English by taking an internationally recognized English test. The test results must be received by the application deadline of 1 February.


Application Requirements

The application deadline for entry in August 2026 is 1 February 2026. The application form will be open from 1 December 2025. A complete application includes:

  • Portfolio
  • Project Description
  • Letter of Motivation
  • CV showing former education and design-related experience and activities
  • Secondary School certificate / High School Diploma
  • University degree certificate(s)/diploma(s)
  • Transcript of records
  • Documentation of English language proficiency
  • Copy of passport or picture ID

Portfolio

The portfolio must include documentation of relevant design production that demonstrates the applicant's academic qualifications for carrying out an independent MA project. The portfolio should consist of 6-10 works, each documented by 4-5 pictures and a short text explaining the work.


Interview

The interviews will take place in March, and applicants who move on to the interview round are encouraged to have their interview in person in Bergen. Remote interviews via Zoom or similar are also an option.


Tuition Fees

All non-EU/EEA/EFTA students are required to pay a tuition fee of 401,704 NOK for the academic year 2026/2027.


Additional Requirements for Non-EU/EEA/EFTA Applicants

Applicants from outside the EU/EEA/EFTA must document sufficient funding to obtain a residence permit for studies, which is currently NOK 166,859. They must also deposit the required amount to Sammen's Deposit Account for International Students to receive the necessary documentation for applying for a residence permit.


Application Status

The application status will be "Under consideration" until the application process has been finalized. Applicants who have not yet documented their Bachelor's Degree at the time of acceptance will receive a conditional offer of admission.
