Program Overview
Master's in Biology Program
The Master's in Biology program at the University of Bergen is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of biological principles and their applications in solving societal problems. The program offers a range of specialty tracks, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals.
Program Structure
From autumn 2025 onwards, all students will be admitted to the Biology master's program, not to specific specializations. Early in their studies, students will choose a specialty track, defined by their choice of courses and master's thesis theme.

- Human health and pollutants
- Molecular biology and biotechnology
- Fundamental questions in biology

- Deep Sea Biology
- Ecological and Environmental Change Research Group (EECRG)
- Theoretical Ecology Group
- Fjord and Coastal Ecology
- Environmental Toxicology
- Marine Developmental Biology
- Marine Microbiology
- Sea Lice Research Centre (SLRC)
Prerequisites
The academic admission requirements for the master program in biology are:
- A Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related discipline
- At least 60 ECTS credits in Biology
- A minimum of 7.5 ECTS credits in Chemistry with laboratory work
- A minimum of 7.5 ECTS credits in Statistics
- At least 7.5 ECTS credits in Mathematics (if the applicant does not have Mathematics R2 from secondary school)
Choosing Courses
Students can find relevant courses under the project examples for each research area and should discuss their choices with their supervisor. All new students must investigate which courses fit into their master's program within the first few days after starting.
Application Deadline
The application deadline for the master's program is:
- 15 April / 1 November for Nordic citizens
- 1 March / 1 November for applicants from EU/EAA
