Course Description
The course aims to provide a general introduction to the fundamental principles of marine acoustics, with an emphasis on physical mechanisms and laws, concepts, and methods. It covers topics such as acoustic wave propagation in the sea, reflection and transmission of sound waves, scattering from objects, marine organisms, surfaces, and volume segments, noise and signal fluctuations, and the transmission and reception of sound waves using acoustic transducers/sonar systems.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills, and general competence:
- Knowledge: Students will be able to explain central concepts, laws, and explanatory models within marine acoustics, describe the fundamental physical principles behind the generation, propagation, reception, and processing of acoustic waves in marine environments, and explain central models for the sea as an acoustic waveguide.
- Skills: Students will be able to use basic laws and relationships to solve relatively simple problems within marine acoustics.
- General Competence: Students will have insight into the fundamental principles of marine acoustics, with an emphasis on physical mechanisms, laws, and relationships, and an understanding of central basic methods and problem formulations that are relevant in practical applications of sound in the sea.
Admission Requirements
- Prerequisites: PHYS111 or equivalent knowledge in mechanics.
- Recommended Prerequisites: PHYS271 is a prerequisite for getting good benefit from the course. MAT111, MAT112, INF100, PHYS112, PHYS116 are also recommended.
Study Level
The course is offered at the Master's level.

The course is taught in Bergen.
Evaluation Methods
The course is evaluated through a oral examination (100% of the grade).
Grading Scale
The grading scale used is A-F.
Regular Examination
There is a regular examination every semester.
Literature List
The literature list will be available before July 1 for the autumn semester and December 1 for the spring semester.

Students will evaluate the teaching in accordance with the University's quality assurance system.
