Program Overview


Introduction to Film Production and Broadcast Engineering BEng (Hons)

The University of Surrey offers a unique program that combines engineering theory, artistic visual storytelling, and content production with practical skills for the creative industries. Course Structure

  • Year 1: Students take compulsory modules in The Art of Visual Storytelling, Film Production, Audio Signal Analysis, Audio Electronics 1, Audio Fundamentals, Computer Systems, and Video Fundamentals.
  • Year 2: Students take compulsory modules in Sound in Film and TV, Computer Imaging and Programming, Studio Engineering, Professional Projects Portfolio, Video Streaming and Computer Networks, Broadcast Transmission, Cinematography, and TV Studio Practice.
  • Year 3: Students take compulsory modules in Research Methods, Advanced Colour Science, Technical Project 30, and Creative Production. Students also choose two optional modules from a range of topics, including Visual Narrative Collaborations, Digital Communications, Data & Internet Networking, Writing Gaming, and Screenwriting.

Professional Training Year (PTY)

The PTY is an optional component of the program that provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in the industry. Students can choose to take a PTY in the UK or abroad, and the University provides support and guidance throughout the process.
