Data Management I

This program demonstrates how to use many of Stata's data management commands to clean a dataset. Participants are shown how to:


  • Convert numbers that have been stored as strings to numbers stored as numbers
  • Convert dates stored as strings to formatted date variables
  • Label variables and values
  • Identify and replace unusual data
  • Convert missing value codes to missing values
  • Identify duplicate records in a dataset

Data Management II

This program is a continuation of Data Management I and includes topics such as:


  • Importing data from the internet
  • Appending and merging files
  • Using frames to work with multiple datasets simultaneously
  • Reshaping data from "long" format to "wide" and vice-versa
  • Using contract and collapse to create summary data
  • Using egen to create new variables
  • Using -by- and -if- to work with subsets of your data
