Program Overview


Introduction to Urban Design, MSc in Technology

The Master's in Urban Design (MSc in Technology) is designed for individuals who want to develop cities and urban spaces in a sustainable manner. This program focuses on designing cities for and with people, taking into account the complex connections of urban areas.


Programme Structure

The Urban Design program is conducted in English, with a focus on problem-based project and group work. Students will work with urban, architectural, and mobility theory, and gain experience with both analogue and digital methods for analysis, design, and communication.


Skills and Job Opportunities

With a Master's in Urban Design (MSc in Technology), graduates will have a strong academic foundation, enabling them to work professionally with the complex connections of cities. They will be able to solve problems related to climate change and sustainability, urban growth and shrinkage, migration, inequality, and social challenges.


Admission and Requirements

There is no bachelor's degree with a legal claim to this master's program. However, certain bachelor's degrees are deemed qualified for admission, including:


  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Engineering (Architecture and Design with specialization in Architecture and Urban Design), Aalborg University
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Engineering (Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning), Aalborg University
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Architectural Engineering, Technical University of Denmark
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B Eng) in Architectural Engineering, Technical University of Denmark
  • Bachelor of Architectural Technology and Construction Management, EASV, KEA, VIA, Zealand, UCL, and UCN

Restricted Admission

This program has restricted admission, which means that even though applicants are qualified for admission, they are not guaranteed a study place. Assessment and prioritization of qualified applicants will be based on the following selection criteria:


  • Grade point average of the qualifying bachelor's degree
  • The number of ECTS credits in addition to the required 30 ECTS credits obtained within relevant subject areas of the qualifying Bachelor's degree
  • Relevant work experience of at least one year
  • Relevant courses within the subject area (other than the BSc degree and minimum 10 ECTS)

Number of Study Places

Urban Design, cand.tech offers 20 study places in 2025.


Student Life

Group and project work at AAU take place in a dynamic and research-based learning environment. Students become part of a community that collaborates on specific projects, goes on excursions and research trips, and participates in seminars, open lectures, exhibitions, and the annual Urban Design Day.
