Interaction between Wind Power Generation Units and Electrical Loads or Power System
Program Overview
Introduction to the Module
The module "Interaction between Wind Power Generation Units and Electrical Loads or Power System" is designed for students in the Master of Science in Energy Engineering program, specifically those specializing in Electrical Energy Engineering or similar fields.
Content, Progress, and Pedagogy of the Module
This module builds upon the knowledge gained during the first semester of the Master's program. It focuses on the interaction between wind power generation units and electrical loads or power systems, aiming to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in analyzing, designing, and optimizing such systems.
Learning Objectives
Knowledge
- Students will have knowledge and comprehension of how to set up demands/specifications for the interaction between wind power generator units and electrical loads or power systems.
Skills
- Analyze the steady-state control and operation of wind power generation units connected to a system with time-varying loads.
- Analyze the load flow in a system with wind generation using digital platforms.
- Analyze power system stability in a grid with high wind power penetration using digital platforms.
- Analyze the power quality aspects and identify the need and requirements for compensation units.
- Identify and develop appropriate models for wind power generation units, including subsystems suitable for specific power systems studies using digital platforms.
- Assess wind power systems by means of simulation tools and/or laboratory experiments or by using real measured data series.
- Demonstrate innovative and entrepreneurial behavior, giving value to the developed system/apparatus.
Competences
- Control the working and development process within the project theme.
- Identify specific technical requirements at system and subsystem levels within the project theme.
- Independently identify and analyze technical and scientific problems related to the integration of wind power generation units in the electrical grid.
- Propose and select feasible solutions for solving specific challenges related to the grid integration of wind power.
- Independently continue own development in competence and specialization.
Type of Instruction
The module is taught through problem-based project organized work in groups. Projects can be made in cooperation with external partners and can range from disciplinary to cross-disciplinary or part of a multi-disciplinary project. The background of the project typically involves a wind turbine system, either stand-alone or grid-connected, which must be controlled under time-varying loads and wind speeds.
Extent and Expected Workload
This is a 15 ECTS project module, with an expected workload of 450 hours for the student.
