Program Overview


Introduction to the Media Arts Cultures Programme

The Media Arts Cultures programme is an Erasmus + Joint Master Degree offered in cooperation with the University for Continuing Education Krems, Danube University Krems (DUK), Aalborg University (AAU), University of Lodz (UoL), and LASALLE College of the Arts (LAS). This programme is designed to provide students with advanced historical and theoretical knowledge in Media Arts, combining innovative pedagogical approaches with transdisciplinary methods and critical thinking.


Programme Structure and Contents

The Media Arts Cultures programme is a two-year, research-based, full-time study programme consisting of 120 ECTS credits. The programme is structured across four semesters, with each semester taking place at a different university:


  • The first semester, "Histories and Archiving," is held in Austria and focuses on the humanities-oriented study of Media Arts histories, science, and technology, along with innovative archiving methods.
  • The second semester, held in Denmark, involves the applied processes of experience design projects and their relationships to academic methodologies and non-academic activities.
  • Between the second and third semesters, students complete an internship with Associated Partners.
  • The third semester, conducted in Poland, delves into the development of knowledge and creative output within the evolving field of Media Arts Cultures.
  • The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's Thesis, which can be completed at any of the three EU country universities.

    • Experience Design in Media Art Cultures: From Concept to Production (20 ECTS)
    • Technologies of Experience Design in Media Arts Cultures (5 ECTS)
    • Elective: Media Arts Case Studies (5 ECTS)
  • Consortium Modules (10 ECTS):
    • Internship (5 ECTS)
    • Independent Study (5 ECTS)
  • University of Lodz Modules (20/25 ECTS):
    • New Media Aesthetics (10 ECTS)
    • Elective: Media Arts & Management and Curating or Game Culture and Gamification (10 ECTS)
    • Elective: Research Skills and Methods II or Approaching Interactive Media (5 ECTS)

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Media Arts Cultures programme requires a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in relevant fields such as art history, cultural studies, media/communication studies, fine arts practice, cultural management, museology, art restoration, computer science, or any other field directly related to digital media, the arts, or culture. Applicants must also demonstrate sufficient knowledge of English, corresponding to level B2 within the CEFR, through certificates like TOEFL or IELTS.


Competence Profile

Graduates of the Media Arts Cultures programme will acquire a comprehensive set of competencies, including:


  • Knowledge of the historical, institutional, and societal contexts of media art and media culture.
  • Understanding of technology- and experience-based design contexts.
  • Skills in operationalizing research methods and in-depth reflection.
  • Competencies in developing innovative strategies and their practical application.
  • Ability to find solutions to globally important issues in the field of media art and media culture.

Additional Information

The programme is conducted in English, and fluency in English is a prerequisite. The Master's Thesis must include an English summary, and if the project is written in English, the summary can be in Danish.
