Program Overview
Introduction to the Master's Programme
The Master's programme in Surveying, Planning and Land Management is a 2-year, research-based, full-time study programme. The programme is set to 120 ECTS credits and is offered in Aalborg.
Programme Title and Designation
The Master's programme entitles the graduate to the Danish designation Landinspektør, cand.geom. The English designation is: Master of Science (MSc) in Surveying, Planning and Land Management.
Admission Requirements
Applicants with a legal right of admission (retskrav) must have a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Engineering in Surveying, Planning and Land Management from Aalborg University (Campus Aalborg).
Programme Structure and Contents
The programme is structured in modules and organized as a problem-based study. A module is a programme element or a group of programme elements, which aims to give students a set of professional skills within a fixed time frame specified in ECTS credits, and concluding with one or more examinations within specific exam periods that are defined in the curriculum.

- Surveying, Geoinformatics and Land Management in a Cross-disciplinary Perspective (15 ECTS)
- Managing the Use of Land (5 ECTS)
- Geocomputation and Spatial Analytics (5 ECTS)
- Positioning (5 ECTS)
- Electives 2nd Semester (15 ECTS)
- Spatial Planning and Governance (5 ECTS)
- Geovisualisation and Remote Sensing (5 ECTS)
- Property Rights and Land Use Regulation (5 ECTS)
- Professional Development (20 ECTS)
- Project Management and Project Economy (5 ECTS)
- Special Themes for Chartered Surveyors (5 ECTS)
- Master's Thesis (30 ECTS)
Electives 2nd Semester
Students can choose one of the following project modules:
- Land Management (15 ECTS)
- Positioning and Mapping (15 ECTS)
- Geoinformatics (15 ECTS)
Competence Profile
The graduate of the Master's programme will have the following competence profile:
Knowledge
- Must possess knowledge about surveying, geoinformatics, planning and land management, which in selected fields is based on the highest international research within the subject area
- Must be able to understand and, on a scientific basis, be able to make reflections on the knowledge and identify scientific problems as well as practical problems or challenges in relation to those subject areas
Skills
- Must master the scientific methodologies and tools as well as master general skills related to work within the interdisciplinary field of surveying, geoinformatics, planning and land management
- Must be able to evaluate and select among the scientific theories, methods, and general skills of the subject area, and on a scientific basis be able to further develop sustainable models and solutions
- Must be able to communicate research-based knowledge and discuss professional and scientific problems with both peers and non-specialists
Competences
- Must be able to manage work and developments, that are complex, unpredictable and require new solutions – in order to contribute to national and global challenges (including for example UN's Sustainable Development Goals)
- Must be able to independently initiate and carry out discipline-specific and interdisciplinary cooperation and assume professional responsibility
- Must be able to ensure his/hers further professional development and specialisation
Rules Concerning Credit Transfer
The Study Board can approve that passed programme elements from other educational programmes at the same level replaces programme elements within this programme (credit transfer).
Exemptions
The Study Board's possibilities to grant exemption, including exemption to further examination attempts and special examination conditions, are stated in the Examination Policies and Procedures.
Rules for Examinations

Language Requirements
It is assumed that the student can read academic texts and use reference works, etc., in English.
Additional Information
All students who have not participated in Aalborg University's PBL introductory course during their Bachelor's degree must attend the introductory course "Problem-based Learning and Project Management". The introductory course must be approved before the student can participate in the project exam.
