Program Overview


Introduction to the Master's Program in Tourism

The Master's program in Tourism is a research-based, full-time study program offered by Aalborg University. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the tourism industry, including destination governance, tourism cultures, market communication, and innovation in a tourism context.


Program Structure and Contents

The program spans four semesters, with a total of 120 ECTS credits. The first semester focuses on destination analysis, market communication, and tourism consumption. The second semester covers tourism policy, innovation, and co-creating tourism encounters. The third semester offers students the opportunity to specialize by choosing a project-oriented module in a tourism organization or a university transfer at a university abroad or in Denmark. The fourth semester is reserved for writing the Master's thesis.

  • Problem-Based Projects and Research Methodologies (5 ECTS)
  • Market Communication in Tourism (5 ECTS)

  • Tourism Policy and Destination Governance (5 ECTS)
  • Innovation in Tourism (5 ECTS)
  • Project-Oriented Module in a Tourism Organisation (30 ECTS)

Elective Modules

Students can choose from the following elective modules:


  • Key Issues in Tourism Consumption (5 ECTS)
  • Cultures, Societies and Histories of the Peoples of the Arctic (5 ECTS)
  • Co-creating Tourism Encounters (5 ECTS)
  • The Arctic in the Age of Globalization (5 ECTS)

Specialisation in Arctic Studies

Students have the option to specialize in Arctic Studies, which comprises two modules: Cultures, Societies and Histories of the Peoples of the Arctic and The Arctic in the Age of Globalization. To obtain the full specialization, students must choose their project-oriented module/university transfer and their Master's thesis topic within the field of Arctic Studies.


Admission Requirements

Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and International Studies from Aalborg University have a legal right of admission. Other Bachelor's degrees that may qualify for admission include:


  • English Language and International Studies from Aalborg University
  • International Business Communication from Aalborg University or Aarhus University
  • History from Aarhus University or Aalborg University
  • Globalisation and Cultural Identity from Aarhus University
  • Geography from Aalborg University

Language and Examination

All courses and examinations are conducted in English. Examinations are either internally or externally co-examined, and students are assessed based on the 7-point grading scale or a pass/fail grade.


Competence Profile

The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the tourism industry, including destination governance, tourism cultures, market communication, and innovation in a tourism context. Graduates will be qualified for employment in the tourism industry and for further research (PhD programs).


Rules and Regulations

The program is subject to the Examination Policies and Procedures published by Aalborg University. The Study Board's decisions regarding credit transfer and exemptions are based on an academic assessment. Students can find further information about exams and regulations in Moodle.
