Teacher Licensure
The School of Education offers degree and non-degree licensure programs at the Elementary, Middle, and Secondary levels.
Types of Licenses
- Professional Educator License (PEL): This is the initial teaching license, which requires student teaching.
- Subsequent Endorsements (SE): These are optional and can be added to a PEL to expand the level and/or content in which you are licensed to teach.
Professional Educator License (PEL)
To obtain a PEL, students must:
- Earn a Bachelor's Degree
- Complete required coursework
- Complete required field hours
- Pass the appropriate content test
- Meet minimum GPA requirements
- Earn a final Student Teaching grade of at least C
Subsequent Endorsements
The School of Education offers subsequent endorsements in the following areas:
- Computer Applications
- Computer Science
- Early Childhood Education
- Educational Technology
- English as a Second Language/Bilingual
- Learning Behavior Specialist 1
These endorsements can be added to a PEL and do not require student teaching. Specific requirements for subsequent endorsements can be found on the ISBE website.
