Program Overview

Erasmus+ Practical Training

General Information

The Erasmus+ mobility program for practical training provides students with the opportunity to gain professional experience in a company, organization, university, research institution, laboratory, or any other relevant workplace in European countries participating in the Erasmus+ program.

The objectives of the practical training mobility are:

  • to acquire professional experience
  • to develop transversal skills (such as communication, language, critical thinking, problem-solving, intercultural, and research skills)
  • to develop and acquire digital skills
  • to facilitate the personal development of the student (such as the ability to adapt to new situations and self-confidence)

Subject of Practical Training (Acquisition of Work Experience)

The student mobility for practical training abroad aims to acquire work experience related to their field of study and can be carried out with physical presence in the host organization, in the host country.

Regarding the workload, participants must work full-time, based on the working hours of the host organization.

Eligible Participants

Eligible to participate in the practical training mobility are:

  • Students of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cycle of studies (undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students) who are enrolled in a Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, regardless of the academic year (from the 1st year of study) and maintain their student status until the date of selection of students and announcement of results by the Committee of International Relations and European Educational Programs of the University.
  • Recent graduates. Recent graduates must be selected while maintaining their student status and must carry out and complete their practical training within one year after their graduation.
  • If the student loses their student status before selection, their application is automatically canceled.
  • Students in their last year of study or students on a thesis should contact the Secretariat of their Department for information regarding the maintenance of their student status.
  • Students who have already moved with the Erasmus+ program for studies or practical training in the past are eligible to move again, provided that the total duration of mobility does not exceed twelve (12) months (old and new duration are counted), per cycle of study. However, they will have low priority in the selection, compared to students who are applying for mobility for the first time.

Eligible Period of Mobility for Practical Training

The practical training mobility can be carried out from October 1st to July 31st of an academic year. For example, for the academic year, the practical training mobility can be carried out from October 1st, 2025, to July 31st, 2026.

The end of the practical training depends on the period the student wishes to carry out a practical training period (e.g., 2 months, 2.3 months, 3.5 months, 3.7 months, 4 months, etc.) but not later than July 31st, 2026.

Duration of Practical Training

Students have the opportunity to move for studies or practical training in all cycles of study (1st cycle: undergraduate studies, 2nd cycle: graduate studies, 3rd cycle: doctoral studies) from two (2) to twelve (12) months in each cycle of study, regardless of the number of mobilities and the type of mobility (studies or practical training).

The minimum duration of mobility for practical training abroad is two (2) months.

Funded Duration of Practical Training

At the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the duration of mobility for practical training with a grant is from two (2) to six (6) months.

The student should carefully choose the duration of the practical training, as any change in the start of the practical training is not accepted, except in cases of emergency or "force majeure" with the submission of proof.

Changing the duration or mobility start date due to oath or other academic obligations is not accepted.

Eligible Countries for Practical Training Mobility

Students must carry out the practical training mobility activity with physical presence in European Union (EU) member states participating in the Erasmus+ program: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Finland - in third countries associated with the program: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey - in third countries not associated with the program: Andorra, San Marino, Vatican City, Monaco, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Faroe Islands.

Within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, practical training cannot be carried out in Greece.

Participating Organizations/Host Institutions

  • Eligible Host Institutions
    • Any public or private organization active in the labor market or in the fields of education, training, youth, research, and innovation can be an eligible host institution.
    • Such an organization can be a small, medium, or large enterprise (including social enterprises), a public body at local, regional, or national level, embassies or consulates of the EU member state or the associated third country of the institution of origin, permanent representation of Greece and Cyprus to the European Union, etc.
  • Ineligible Organizations for Practical Training
    • The following types of organizations are not eligible as host organizations for the realization of practical training by students:
      • EU institutions and other EU bodies, including specialized agencies (a detailed list of ineligible organizations is available on the website)
      • Organizations managing EU programs, such as National Erasmus+ Agencies, to avoid potential conflicts of interest and/or double funding
      • 'Intermediary' organizations that initially accept the student for practical training in their own organization and then place them in a different organization for the realization of the practical training
      • Organizations that have been characterized as 'unreliable organizations' by the National Agency (IKY): DOCTUM, Futuro Digitale, DPoint Group, Robot4Work

However, some host institutions (universities/institutes), according to their internal regulation, consider it necessary to have a signed bilateral agreement between the two institutions and specifically between the corresponding Departments or to sign a shorter-term agreement along with the Learning Agreement.

For schools in the country of destination (purely Greek schools in the EU), students send the application to both the education coordinator's office in the area of responsibility of the school of interest and the Director of the School.

Practical training in Greek Authorities abroad (embassy, consulate, permanent representation) can be carried out if a call for applications has been previously announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
