Music analysis I: Cases and...
Program Overview
Program Details
Course Description
The present course extends the knowledge acquired from the courses "Theory and Practice of Tonal Music" and "Morphology of European Music" in two parallel directions in the repertoire of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods. The first direction concerns various cases of works written in cyclic form and specifically compositions that either consist of two or more parts thematically connected to each other or consist of a complex part that assimilates to a greater or lesser extent the form as well as the character of a sequence of different parts. The other direction lies in cases of program music works, where it is examined how and to what extent the extramusical content exercises its influence on the purely musical form (or, conversely, how the latter can be addressed by composers in order to serve simultaneously the respective programmatic contexts).
