Introduction to the MAI² – Doppelmaster Germanistik in Mailand und Mainz
The MAI² – Doppelmaster Germanistik in Mailand und Mainz is a bilateral agreement between the Università degli Studi di Milano (UNIMI) and the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU) for a double master's program. This program leads to the award of a double degree: Diploma di Laurea magistrale in Lingue e Letterature europee ed extraeuropee and a Master of Arts (Germanistik).
Program Details
- Start of the Program: Winter semester 2025/2026
- Application Deadline: June 20, 2025, at 12:00
- Selection Interviews: June 24, 2025, starting at 9:30 AM (online via Microsoft Teams)
- Program Duration: Four semesters
- Number of Students: Up to 10 students per intake
- Study Locations: The first year (first two semesters) at the Università degli Studi di Milano (Italy), and the second year (third and fourth semesters) at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Germany)
- Thesis Supervision: By a joint commission of lecturers from both universities

- Certificate from the home university or self-declaration of grades achieved during the bachelor's studies and the final grade
- Proof of German language proficiency (C1/DSH 2)

- Selection Process: Through an interview with a commission composed of lecturers from both universities
- Interview Date: June 24, 2025, starting at 9:30 AM (online via Microsoft Teams)
- Selection Criteria:
- Interview (30/100 points)
- Relevance and quality of previous academic career (15/100 points)
- CV (10/100 points)
- Letter of motivation (25/100 points)
- German language proficiency demonstrated in the documents submitted in German and during the interview (20/100 points)
- Minimum Points Required: 70/100 points to be admitted to the program
Study Program
- The program includes courses from both universities, which are an integral part of the study.
- The study program to be completed is agreed upon with the responsible lecturers from both universities.

- Letteratura tedesca LM (German Literature for the Master's Course) – 9 credits
- Letteratura tedesca contemporanea (Contemporary German Literature) – 6 credits
- Letteratura tedesca e intermedialità (German Literature and Intermedial Studies) – 9 credits
- Lingua tedesca 1 LM (German Language and Linguistics for the Master's Course) – 9 credits
- Linguistica tedesca (German Linguistics) – 6 credits
- Letteratura tedesca antica e medievale (Ancient and Medieval German Literature) – 9 credits
- Laboratorio Letteratura tedesca antica e medievale (Seminar on Ancient and Medieval German Literature) – 3 credits
Second Year (3rd and 4th Semesters) – Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz
- VEVV (Lecture on Language Acquisition, Language Use, and Language Comparison) – 3 credits
- Modul SGLI 17 (Focus Module German Literary Studies) – 6 credits
- Modul SGLI 19 (Focus Module German Literary Studies) – 9 credits
- Modul EGSP 3 (Supplementary Module German Linguistics) – 9 credits
- Modul SGLI 18 (Focus Module German Literary Studies) – 12 credits
- Master's Thesis – Tesi di laurea (including Modul SGLI 20 and Master's Examination) – 27 credits
Allowance for Living Expenses
Students whose home university is UNIMI may receive an allowance for mobility costs based on their ISEE certification submitted to the Student Secretariat. Similarly, students whose home university is JGU will be supported within the framework of Erasmus mobility.
