Program Overview
University Program Information
The Johannes Gutenberg-Universität offers three subsidiary subjects in law:
- Beifach Zivilrecht (Civil Law)
- Beifach Öffentliches Recht (Public Law)
- Beifach Strafrechtspflege (Criminal Justice)
Program Structure
Each of the three subsidiary subjects comprises 60 credit points (ECTS) and is designed to be completed in 6 semesters.

Combination Options
Each of the three subsidiary subjects can be combined with the core subjects offered in the two-subject Bachelor's programs at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität.
Admission Restrictions
- The subsidiary subject Strafrechtspflege is admission-restricted in all semesters.
- The subsidiary subjects Zivilrecht and Öffentliches Recht are only admission-restricted in the first semester, and admission is free in all higher semesters.
Program Content
Beifach Zivilrecht
The program focuses on the fundamental regulations of legal relationships between private individuals, including the law of dependent employment, family and inheritance law, and business transactions. The program aims to provide students with the ability to independently apply legal principles to civil law cases.
Beifach Öffentliches Recht
The program concentrates on the area of public law, covering the norms that authorize or obligate holders of public authority. The program includes the study of state organizational law, constitutional law, administrative law, and European law.
Beifach Strafrechtspflege
The program is based on the legal foundations for the education, resocialization, and treatment of criminals. The program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of criminal law, including the general part of criminal law, offenses against persons, and the functioning of the criminal justice system.

- The Beifach Zivilrecht program consists of four compulsory modules and one elective module.
- The Beifach Öffentliches Recht program consists of four compulsory modules and one elective module.
- The Beifach Strafrechtspflege program consists of five compulsory modules.

Beifach Strafrechtspflege

- Module 3: Historical and philosophical foundations of criminal law
- Module 4: Criminological knowledge with practical relevance
- Module 5: Advanced criminological knowledge with practical relevance

Program Goals
The programs aim to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the respective areas of law, as well as the ability to apply legal principles and think critically.
