Introduction to the International Master's Programme in Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism (SoMu)
The International Master's Programme in Sociolinguistics and Multilingualism, abbreviated as SoMu, is a two-year joint-degree program offered by Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas (Lithuania), and Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz (Germany), in cooperation with the University of Stockholm (Sweden) and the University of Tartu (Estonia). This program provides in-depth knowledge to students interested in the role of language in society.
What is SoMu?
SoMu is designed for students who want to understand the complexities of language in society, particularly in the context of multilingualism. The program starts in the winter semester, is admission-free, taught in English, and provides students with an international degree.
Why SoMu?
The program focuses on the growing importance of multilingualism internationally, addressing public interest in how to deal with multilingualism and its implications for societal change. It covers the interaction of different languages and cultures in everyday encounters and social areas, including commerce, migration, and tourism.
What Makes SoMu Special?
- Multilingualism: A broad approach to multilingualism that extends beyond language policy and planning issues concerning just one European minority population or country.
- Language Focus: Students acquire competences in two international vehicular languages as well as in at least two less commonly spoken and taught languages.
- Interdisciplinary Competences: The program advances students' interdisciplinary skills in use-based linguistic theories beyond sociolinguistics, as well as in the cultural and political sciences and constructivist theories of sociology.
- Unique Geographical Focus: The program covers the entire Nordic and Baltic Sea region, offering a unique perspective not found in other linguistic MA programs.
- Cross-Cultural Communication: The language courses and student mobility provide a rich context for deepening cross-cultural awareness and developing cross-cultural communication skills.
- Built-in Mobility: Studying abroad is compulsory, with equally long study periods in three universities in three different countries, accumulating international experiences and language skills.
- Professional Communication Skills: The program emphasizes critical thinking and practical research skills, supported by developing student competence in academic communication.
- Knowledge Application in Practice: Graduates will be able to identify and formulate sociolinguistic research problems, plan and organize individual research-based contributions, and conduct empirical research projects.
