Program Overview
M. Sc. Naturwissenschaftliche Informatik
The Master's program in Naturwissenschaftliche Informatik combines computer science with a focus on one of the following natural science fields: mathematics, physics, meteorology, or biology. This allows students to deepen their knowledge in a natural science application field while acquiring computer science skills at the master's level.
Key Facts
- Degree: Master of Science (M. Sc.)
- Standard Period of Study: 4 semesters
- Start of Study: Winter and summer semesters
- Admission Requirements: Unrestricted admission
- Language: German
- Application Deadlines: March 1 (summer semester), September 1 (winter semester)
Study Overview
Depending on the bachelor's degree held when entering the master's program, students attend corresponding courses to align their knowledge base. For example, those with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, physics, meteorology, or biology take basic courses in computer science, while those with a computer science background take courses from the chosen focus area. Subsequently, students take in-depth modules in computer science. Towards the end of the study, a cross-disciplinary master's seminar and the master's thesis follow.
Study Plan (Exemplary)
The study plan is designed to ensure a comprehensive education in both computer science and the chosen natural science field.
Career Prospects
With a Master's degree in Naturwissenschaftliche Informatik, graduates have diverse career opportunities in the modern job market. Unlike a conventional computer science master's degree, this program provides analytical and mathematical skills, as well as methods for natural science data analysis, which can be applied in various fields, such as the pharmaceutical industry, development of complex systems with large data volumes, and science and research.
Flexible Study Start
The study can begin in both the winter and summer semesters, as virtually all courses are offered every semester. Three weeks before the start of lectures, a mathematics bridge course is offered for all first-year students to refresh their school mathematics and facilitate the transition from school to university. This is also a good opportunity to get familiar with the university and meet fellow students.
Application
The application deadline is September 1 for the winter semester and March 1 for the summer semester. All further information on enrollment and the application process can be found on the central web pages of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
