Introduction to the Forster Summer School

The Forster Summer School is a program offered by the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, focusing on various research topics of global relevance. In 2023, the program explored the theme of "urban climate," with an emphasis on adaptation, development, and sustainable transformation.

Program Overview

The 2023 Forster Summer School took place from July 21 to August 4, 2023, and was attended by 27 students from 15 nations. The program aimed to discuss possible approaches for the long-term and sustainable improvement of the urban climate, identifying opportunities for action on regional, global, and international levels.

Program Structure

The program consisted of:

• Scientific lectures and discussions
• Practical exercises, including:
  • A workshop on tree damage in the Green School/Botanical Garden of the JGU
  • A mapping project on the University campus
  • An expert exchange on climate protection projects in Worms
  • German workshops
  • A sustainable city tour of Mainz
  • A photo project on climate protection and climate adaptation projects from the participants' cities of origin or study

The evaluations and feedback from the participants testified to the very high positive response to the summer school, with comments including:
