Program Overview

The Master's program in Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache (German as a Foreign and Second Language) is offered by the Herder-Institut at the University of Leipzig.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in German as a Foreign Language or a related field. The program is a consecutive Master's program, meaning that applicants must have a Bachelor's degree with a focus on German as a Foreign Language or a comparable degree.

Application Procedure

The application procedure for the Master's program in Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache is as follows:

• Applicants who have completed their Bachelor's degree in Germany must apply online through the University of Leipzig's AlmaWeb portal.
• Applicants who have completed their Bachelor's degree abroad must apply online through uni-assist e.V.
• The application deadline for the winter semester 2025/26 is May 31, 2025.

Required Documents

The following documents are required for the application:

• A tabular curriculum vitae
• A certificate of higher education entrance qualification or a recognized equivalent (Abitur certificate)
• A certificate of a first professionally qualifying degree in German as a Foreign Language or a comparable program
• A transcript of records for all completed degrees or examinations
• Proof of subject-specific training, voluntary internships, or similar experiences related to the intended course of study
• The title of the Bachelor's thesis
• A written justification for the study wish (motivation letter)
• Proof of English language proficiency at the B2 level
• For non-native speakers: proof of German language proficiency at the C1 level

Selection Procedure

The Master's program in Deutsch als Fremd- und Zweitsprache is not subject to restrictions, but the Herder-Institut's selection committee reviews the applications to ensure that the formal requirements are met. After reviewing the applications, the committee may invite applicants to a 20-minute selection interview. The interview can be conducted via phone or video conference for applicants who are abroad.
