Overview of the Master of Arts in Germanistik Program

The Master of Arts in Germanistik is a research-oriented program that provides students with in-depth knowledge of German language and literature. The program is designed to equip students with advanced skills in German language and literature, as well as intercultural competence.


Program Structure

The program consists of 120 credits, which can be completed in 4 semesters. Students can choose between two specializations: Sprachwissenschaft (Language Science) and Literaturwissenschaft (Literary Studies).


Specialization in Sprachwissenschaft

  • 60 credits in the area of Sprachwissenschaft
  • 30 credits in the area of Literaturwissenschaft
  • 30 credits for the master's thesis

Specialization in Literaturwissenschaft

  • 60 credits in the area of Literaturwissenschaft
  • 30 credits in the area of Sprachwissenschaft
  • 30 credits for the master's thesis

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, students must have:


  • A bachelor's degree in Germanistik or a related field
  • Knowledge of older and newer German literature, as well as historical and contemporary language science
  • Knowledge of two foreign languages, one of which must be at the B2 level and the other at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • For students whose native language is not German: knowledge of German at the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
